Gold and silver have served as stores of value for thousands of years. They act as a hedge against inflation, currency devaluation, and economic uncertainty — making them a key component of any diversified portfolio. Unlike stocks or bonds, physical metals carry no counterparty risk.
The spot price is the live market price of a metal per troy ounce. When you buy a coin or bar, you pay the spot price plus a premium — which covers minting, distribution, and dealer margins. Understanding this helps you evaluate deals and time your purchases strategically.
Government-minted coins (American Eagles, Canadian Maple Leafs) carry a higher premium but offer guaranteed purity, legal tender status, and maximum liquidity. Bars and rounds are typically cheaper per ounce but may be harder to resell quickly. A healthy portfolio often includes a mix of both.
Coin grading ranges from Poor (P-1) to Perfect Mint State (MS-70). Professional grading services like PCGS and NGC certify and slab coins for maximum confidence. For bullion purchases, look for recognized mint marks, correct weight, and matching edge reeding. When in doubt, buy graded — especially for higher-value pieces.
How you store your metals matters. Home safes, bank safe deposit boxes, and professional vault storage each have tradeoffs in cost, accessibility, and insurance. For large holdings, consider our Logistics service for fully insured, secure storage solutions.
